Engrossed In The Past

This writing lark is a fine excuse for reading books. We writers learn how to create by reading the work of others. Occasionally a book can prove a fine examples of how not to do it!

Lately I’ve been mired in the 19th century, more by accident than design. It started with a fascinating book about British women in India, which led me to another detailing the adventures of one of them. That’s still not read, and is situated on my teetering TBR pile.

Meanwhile, I’ve finished Louisa on the Front Lines by Samantha Seiple, a truly fascinating account of Louisa May Alcott’s life, concentrating on her nursing service during the American Civil War. As a fan of her Litte Women, et al, learning details of her life was enlightening—a truly amazing woman ahead of her time.

Now I’m reading The Doll Factory, by Elizabeth MacNeal, a book that’s been highly praised. Certainly, it drops the reader right into the mid 19th century, with its details concerning the more grotty aspects of life in Victorian England.

Going back in time to the 1800s has been a happy accident. At the moment I’m still working on a medieval fantasy for children, but much on my mind are the descendants of family who inspired my novel, The Heart Has Its Reasons. They had amazing adventures that I’m longing to write about!
